What Does a Cracked Chimney Crown Mean?
The chimney crown is the masonry surface at the top of many chimneys that helps direct water away from the chimney structure. Cracks or deterioration can increase weather exposure and may develop alongside other masonry or moisture concerns.

The basics
What Is a Chimney Crown?
The crown sits at the very top of a masonry chimney, covering the brick around the flue opening. Its role is to shed rain and snow away from the masonry and the flue, so water runs off the top of the chimney instead of soaking into it.
The crown is different from the chimney cap. The cap is a separate cover that sits over the flue opening itself to help limit rain, debris and animals. Learn more about chimney cap installation.
Warning signs
Common Signs of Chimney Crown Damage
Not every crack is severe, but any of these is worth having looked at.
- Visible cracks in the crown surface
- Crumbling or deteriorated crown material
- Gaps between the crown and the flue or brick
- Pieces of masonry or concrete found below the chimney
- Staining near the upper part of the chimney
- Deterioration noticed after winter
- Moisture concerns that keep coming back
Causes
Why Do Chimney Crowns Crack?
Repeated weather exposure
The crown sits fully exposed to rain, sun, wind and snow year after year.
Moisture
Water that soaks into crown material can weaken it over time.
Freeze-thaw cycles
Absorbed water expands when it freezes, which can gradually widen small cracks.
Age and deterioration
Crown materials naturally wear as a chimney gets older.
Movement or settling
Minor movement in the structure can stress the crown.
Previous damage
Earlier cracks or past damage can continue to develop.
Moisture
Can a Cracked Chimney Crown Cause Water Problems?
Cracks may allow greater moisture exposure around the top of the chimney. Water entry can also come from other sources, including the chimney cap, masonry joints, brick deterioration, flashing and other exterior conditions, so the crown should not be assumed to be the cause. Read more about chimney leaks and water damage.
Masonry
Chimney Crown Damage and Masonry Deterioration
Crown deterioration may appear alongside cracked mortar, spalling brick, deteriorated joints or loose masonry, since these materials share the same weather exposure. See our chimney masonry repair page for more.
Inspection
Should a Cracked Chimney Crown Be Inspected?
An inspection may help identify visible crown deterioration, nearby masonry damage, the cap's condition, accessible moisture concerns and other visible chimney issues. Learn more about our chimney inspection service.
Repair
When Chimney Repair May Be Appropriate
The appropriate repair depends on the condition and extent of the visible deterioration. Once the chimney has been evaluated, we explain what we recommend and why. See our chimney repair services.

What Should You Do If You See Cracks on Top of Your Chimney?
- Do not climb onto the roof to inspect it yourself.
- Note any visible cracking that can be seen safely from the ground.
- Watch for water staining or masonry debris.
- Avoid assuming the crown is the only source of moisture.
- Schedule an inspection if deterioration is visible or recurring.
Common questions
Cracked Chimney Crown FAQs
What is a chimney crown?+
The chimney crown is the masonry surface at the top of many chimneys, around the flue. It helps shed rain away from the chimney structure.
Why do chimney crowns crack?+
Common contributors include weather exposure, moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, age, movement or settling, and previous damage.
Can a cracked chimney crown let water in?+
Cracks may allow more moisture to reach the top of the chimney, but not every crack causes a leak, and water can also enter through the cap, masonry or flashing.
Is a chimney crown the same as a chimney cap?+
No. The crown is the masonry surface at the top of the chimney; the cap is a separate cover that sits over the flue opening.
What are signs of chimney crown deterioration?+
Visible cracks, crumbling material, gaps around the crown, masonry pieces below the chimney and staining near the upper chimney are common signs.
